Sometimes our bodies just need a break

Yesterday was such a beautiful day. The sun was out and I couldn't wait to get outside in the afternoon and go for a run/walk. I put my little guy on the bus at noon and went to the bank, when I got back I changed my clothes, grabbed my ipod and off I went. I started running and got about halfway down the street and felt totally exhausted:( I knew I couldn't quit so I walked the 3 miles. I was disappointed:( I was really hoping to run more...I just couldn't do it. I have been very tired the last few days. I am hoping that I am not going to get sick.
I have noticed the last few times I have just went for a walk(usually 3-4 miles) I feel more rewarded by my workout than I do when I run?! Does anyone feel the same? My friend who has lost weight recently says 'not everyone is a runner" just because you can run doesn't mean you "have to ". A lot of info out there actually says walking is better! What do you think?

  1. I think a person "knows" when they want to or can become a runner. I mean for me - I walked every day and loved it but all of a sudden it didn't exhaust me or make me sweat and my body "needed" to go faster. BUT I walked for a LONG time before I ever ran. And running was slow and short - but longer and faster each day. Good luck!

  2. I have read that you can get the same benefits from walking a mile as running that same mile. It will just take longer to walk it. Running is high impact - can be hard on joints. For some reason running seems to be viewed as the "elite" exercise and people aspire to run and that's great. It is not for everybody however. Listen to your body.

  3. I agree with Myra/downsizers. If you walk a set distance, or run it, the outcome in terms of calorie burn has been very, very close to equal for me. I have tested it many times. :)

  4. I have read that you actually burn more calories walking because running it too efficent and your body adapts quickly to it. I use to be a runner but due to knee surgeries I am a walker now, with just a touch of running sometimes.

  5. I think enjoying your workout is what is most important. That may be walking, running, or taking a class. The most important thing is to MOVE :)
